Will Technology give us Immortality?

Genesis 1:26 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."

Cyberimmortality: Science, Religion, and the Battle to Save Our Souls

By William Sims Bainbridge (The Futurist, 2006)

"Research enabling you one day to archive and regenerate your memory, personality, and consciousness--giving you cyberimmortality--may meet resistance from religious groups arguing that the soul is a spirit, not a system. "

"A crucial battle in the long-standing conflict between science and religion will concern the prospects for 'cyberimmortality' --the possibility that converging technologies will offer humans extended lives within information systems, robots, or genetically engineered biological organism.

Author and scientist Ray Kurzweil (The Futurist, 2006) predicts in his new book, The Singularity Is Near, that our computer intelligence and our dependence on computer technology is growing at such a rapid rate that mankind will be irreversibly altered. What is Singularity? From Kurzweil's perspective it is a future period which the pace of technological change will be so fast that and far-reaching that human existence will be irreversibly altered.

The Christian Perspective by Pastor Chris

Joel 2:28 " And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

The prophet Joel predicts that at the end of the age man will be irreversibly altered by the Spirit of the living God.

Daniel 12:4 "But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased."

Is it possible that while man is "running to and fro" that he accidentally triggers the greatest revival in the history of the planet? Will we have scientist to thank for this one day. Wouldn't it be ironic that science in their attempt to disqualify God and Religion actually proved it beyond the shadow of a doubt?

Imagine if you will that one day in the near future science accidentally stumbles on the fact that the spirit and soul can not be separated and that in fact the spirit can actually be measured and validated scientifically?

Ian Pearson and Ian Neild (The Futurist, 2006, p. 36) predict that by 2030 science will have created a hybrid hostile super race. Bainbridge (The Futurist, 2006) said, "Cognitive science is making considerable progress in understanding...the human brain, and it has found no evidence of a soul." He concludes that "The authors of the Bible did not know that the Earth is a planet in orbit around the Sun, that the genetic code is carried by DNA molecules, or that the work of the brain is carried out by neurons. As our own ignorance diminishes, there is no guarantee that anything of the biblical world view will survive."

Numbers 23:19 "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? I guess according to Bill God is a liar and every scientist a man of absolute truth. Is Bill aware that Matthew said, 4:4 "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

The bible was not written as a book of science, but a book for the hoi polloi (common man) to develop a relationship with the Living God. However, I wonder if William (Bill) Bainbridge has ever read the Bible? Did Bill ever read Genesis 2:1 "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the heavenly host of them." Perhaps Bill only heard what people say about the Bible. I know many theologians that have the Bible all mixed up, almost as many scientists that get the science wrong. The operation was a success, but the patient died. So what is so new about that? People use the Bible for their own agenda and some scientists use science for their own interpretation. Why should we be shocked? Science is constantly correcting itself. Does anyone remember when doctors used leeches?

I would imagine that Bill has never read in the Bible, Job 9:9 "Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south;" or Job 38:31, "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?" or perhaps, Amos 5:8 "Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD (YHWH) is His name."

As far as DNA in the Bible goes, how about Matthew 10:30 "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered." or 2 Peter 3:10 "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." or perhaps 2 Peter 3:12 "Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?" I think that Peter understood the word element long before modern science.

Just for the fun of it, how about the fact that Jesus said he would return from the East. If the Biblical view didn't believe in planets how come Jesus knew that the only way one could approach this planet from space is from the east?

I tell you what to watch for--look for science to discover the truth about the soul and then stand back and smell the global revival. Won't they be embarrassed?
