Hygiene Awards!

As Seen in Ho Magazine August 2000

The Florida Family Gathering February 19, 2000

1st Place: Granola Funk

2nd Place: We Will Cook Anything You Bring Cafe

3rd Place: Aztec Tea

4th Place: Shanghai Tea House

5th Place: Lalaland

Fifteen excellent Kitchens competed for the coveted Turkey Feather Hygiene Award.

It was very difficult to choose because all of the Latrines that we inspected were clean and decent facilities.

Here is an example of a Latrine for the Sick at the National Gathering in Pennsylvania 1999. Latrines made with a post hole digger and a bucket with a lid are very clean, comfortable, smell great and are very good for older peole with bad knees. Sometimes toilet lids can be obtained from an Army Surplus or K-Mart store for less than $5.00.

So what did the winners do?

Granola Funk had two Latrines very well marked, extremely clean and toilet seats.

We also appreciated latrines that had:

Lime

Tampax

Sprinkle hand wash bottles

Lots of privacy.

Reading Materials.

Modesty blinds.

Shelter from the rain.

Some kind of structure to sit on.

Evidence of a previous Latrine that was filled in properly.

Mama Kaboom's Latrine had a shelter that also served as a modesty blind. Not seen in the picture is a hanging hand wash bleach water spray bottle and towels. T.P. can be seen in a coffee can.

Shanghai Tea House had an excellent recycle center.

Survivor got the coveted camouflage apron as a special Judges award for overall excellence.

Tips on Winning

You could have gone over the top to win if you had the following items:

Only two Latrines had lime in a can.

No one had women supplies available.

No one had a warning system.

No one had a diaper pail.

Only one Latrine had a trash bag.

Harrison and 2 Hawks putting in a Ladies Latrine.
